At St. Thomas’ Church, St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1935, Rev. W.G. Meadus mam'ed Virginia Mifflin, R.N. The ceremony was performed by Bishop White and the rector, Canon Howlett. Three children were born to this couple: William John "Jack" Mifflin, born September 14, 1936 at New Perlican, Newfoundland; Geraldine St.Clare, born September 2, 1939 at Ecum Secum, Nova Scotia; Carolyn Florence, born April 1, 1942 at Musquodobit Harbor, Nova Scotia. Virginia Meadus recalls the beautiful rectory in the Parish of Port Hill. Though the lack of electricity and paved roads proved detrimental, she remembers many good times and recalls in particular the family’s enjoyment of sleigh rides. Following is her description of a memorable Easter Sunday at Port Hill: It was on an Easter Sunday morning and it was snowing. I thought it too stormy for anyone coming a distance, so I decided we would stay at home (of course the rector was gone awhile). Ten minutes before church time, I looked across the field to the church, and lo and behold, the place was crowded with people, horses and sleighs! And I thinking it too stormy to cross the field! I hurriedly dressed the four of us, and appeared at the church door just in time for the first hymn, and actually found a seat. Shows how the people of Port Hill regard their church and morning service. 82
