telephone company to the job by some forty-eight hours). Then there was the RBI. Women’s Institute in Birch Hill in which Aileen was involved.
One remembers how cold the rectory would always get for about three days somewhere in the course of each winter. One went to bed with not only pyjamas, but also underwear, socks and loads of blankets. In the daytime, we stayed in the kitchen and the study, the only two warm rooms in the house.
We also remember Eleanor and Mac, Laurie and Jeanette, and others. Most of all we remember our first winter there when our son was born in the rectory. My wife remembers the time that Jeanette Birch hid my pipe in some mittens, and the time she "lost" one of my surplices. She hung it on the line outdoors and it disappeared. This was in the winter time. Later on, in the spring, she found it in one of Laurie’s fields by the rectory. It was none the worse for its time outdoors, and I still wear it on occasion.
Of course one could go on to recite more events and name more people. To all those, named and not named, who made our stay in Port Hill so enjoyable, our
greatful thanks, and every good wish for the future.
