The Rev. Barbara F. Minard, B.Sc., M.Div., became the 27th incumbent of the Parish of Port Hill on May lst, 1987. She was ordained to the Priesthood in St. James’ Church on June 12th, 1988 by the Rt. Rev. Arthur Peters, Bishop of Nova Scotia. She was the first ordained woman to serve the Anglican Church on Prince Edward Island. Her ordination was a day of great celebration, and both St. James’ and Old St. James’ (connected by TV hook-up) were filled to overflowing by parishioners, family and friends.
Barbara is the daughter of the late Ven. Thomas W. Savary, Archdeacon of Halifax and Rector of St. Paul’s Church, Halifax, and grand-daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur C. Chute, professor of Divinity, Acadia University. Educated in Halifax schools and Edgehill School, she attended Acadia University, graduating in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.
In 1951 Barbara married Robert H. Minard, a banker and a native of Yarmouth, N.S. When they arrived in Charlottetown in 1971 they had lived in six of Canada’s most easterly provinces and had been blessed with four children: Catherine, now living in Banff, Alta.; Robin, now living in Berlin, Germany; Nancy, now living in Halifax, N.S.; and James, now living in Tibro, Sweden. All their children are married.
In 1972 Barbara and Bob acquired a farm in Ebenezer in the Parish of Milton, P.E.I. During the next 12 years Barbara served 10 years as Lay Reader of the Parish, 5 years as Provincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides, and 2 1/2 years as president of the A.C.W. She also found the time to care for 40 head of cattle, manage a small goat herd, and raise Golden Retrievers. When Bob retired in 1982 they operated a market garden, catering to the tourist trade.
In 1984, when the last of the children left the nest, Barbara, with the full support of her husband, fulfilled a life-long ambition of studying for the ordained ministry. She spent the next three years at the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, receiving her degree in 1987, following which she came to the Parish of Port Hill. As this publication goes to print, Barbara is still carrying out ministry in this parish.
