Probably the event of greatest historic significance in the Parish of Port Hill was the ordination on June 12, 1988 of Rev. Barbara Frances Minard. She was the first woman to be ordained priest in the province of Prince Edward Island. A detailed account of this memorable event is reprinted below (name and date of periodical unavailable). St. James’ Church, Port Hill, P.E.I. was the setting on June 12, for the ordination of the Rev. Barbara Frances Minard to the Order of Priest in the Anglican Church of Canada, the first woman to be ordained on Prince Edward Island. Officiating at the Ordination was the Rt. Rev. Arthur G. Peters, Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia. A very large attendance at the service required employment of closed-circuit television in order that the overflow congregation which filled Old St. James’ Church across the road might be fully participant with those in new St. James’. Several persons also remained seated in automobiles parked nearby and were able to follow the service through the use of sound speakers. Several Anglican priests were present from Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia to participate in the laying on of hands during the consecration of the new priest. The Introit, "Make me a channel of your peace", was sung by Mrs. Margaret Johnston, sister of the ordained. She was accompanied by Mrs. Enid Birch, the church organist. Archdeacon Robert Power, accompanied by Mr. Leigh Newcombe, parish warden, presented the Rev. Mrs. Minard to Bishop Peters. The Rev. Reginald Savary, brother of the ordained, accompanied by the Rev. Max Clattenburg, vested her following the consecration. The Old Testament Lesson was read by Mr. Robert H. Minard, the ordained’s husband, and responsive reading of Psalm 43 was led by their daughter, Nancy Minard. The Epistle was read by Jack Newitt, the parish layreader, and the Gospel was read by the Rev. Dawn Davis, Deacon of St.Paul’s Church, Charlottetown. The sermon was preached by the Rev. Donald Neish, rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Dartmouth, NS. The singing of the Ordination Litany was led by the Rev. Fred Kreiger, professor of the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, NS. The Order of Service was taken from the Book of Alternative Services. The newly ordained priest concelebrated the Holy Eucharist with Bishop Peters immediately following the ordination. Twelve servers of the Parish of Port Hill led the procession from the rectory into St. James’ Church followed by layreaders of the diocese, priests and deacons, and clergy representing the Roman Catholic, United and Presbyterian churches of the community. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Enid Birch, organist, and also by members of the Band of St. Peter’s Church, Lot 11. A reception was held at the Tyne Valley Firehall, with refreshments provided and served to the many guests by ladies of the three parish churches. To present an up—to-date overview of activities and events in the Parish of Port Hill, the 1990 annual report submitted by Rector, Rev. Barbara Minard is included here. 100
