LOTS AND LANDLORDS/

In 1767, just after the British Conquest, P.E.I. was divided into 67 townships or lots in P.E.I. vernacular. They were given out in a Lottery to friends of the Government and as rewards for war efforts. Lot 1, at the Western end of P.E.I., was not settled until 1799 and Lot 11 later. It was these Lots in which the Catholic parishes of Tignish and Palmer Road developed. By this time Lot I was owned by a Liverpool shipbuilder, John Marsh, who was only interested in lumber, but went bankrupt in 1807. Two claimants against his estate were the Cunard family, who also owned Lot 11, and James B. Palmer, Marsh’s agent in Charlottetown.
