GREAT NEW CHURCH To understand why such a large church was built and why so many people resided in the area it might be worth while to look at some of the development that had taken place since the first settle¬ ments in the 1830's. About 1875 the P.E.I. Railway had been extended to Tignish through St. Louis ( Kildare Station ) and DeBlois . The Parish area was developing some rudiments of industry. Farms had been cleared to the extent that farmers had surplus crops and livestock to sell at markets such as the , Newfoundland , the Magdalenes, and St. Pierre - Miquelon . Schooners, built at Miminegash and Skinner's Pond were used for transport as well as in the expanding Fishery. American Companies, such as Myricks and Portland Packing Co., were starting operations in western P.E.I. The recent invention of the can sealer had made possible a Lobster and Mackerel canning
