pointed to rounded edges. These were applied to create larger pat— terns on the surface. Originally these patterns of shingles were painted in different colors and must have looked quite striking. The current white paint reflects a change of taste that began to spread around the whole region shortly after the church was com— pleted. Perhaps someday the original colours, which must have been composed of warm earth tones, might be restored by the

parishioners.
