The rose window, shown on the back cover, contains many symbols of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These symbols are explamed
here beginning at 12 o’clock and going clockwise. ' . The “Fleur—de-lis”: A symbol of the Holy Trinity, 1t is also used as a symbol of the Blessed Virgin because of its derivation
from the Madonna’s lily.
The Star: The oldest picture of our Lady is a catacomb fresco that dates back to the second century. Over the Virgin and Child, a star reveals the fulfillment of the old testament prophecy: “A star shall rise out of Jacob." (Nm 24:17)
Our Blessed Mother is named the star of the sea and the morning star.
The Heart pierced with a sword represents the Mother of Sorrows. This symbolism derives from Simeon’s prophecy to Mary: “and thy own soul a sword shall pierce”. (Lk 2,35)
The Visitation is symbolized with two angels. These angels could be said to represent the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth or of Jesus and John the Baptist.
“Blessed are you among women and
Blessed is the fruit of your womb”. (Lk 1-42)
The Purification of Mary is represented by the pair of turtle— doves offered in sacrifice; and the cross and chalice which announce the sacrifice of her son Jesus.
The Crescent Moon — shown in its proper position and form, it is significant of the glory of the Virgin Mother as borrowed from her son, Jesus Christ, just as the moon reflects the sun.
The Assumption is symbolized by the palm which portrays spiritual victory and the iris portraying the sorrows which she suf— fered as Co—Redemptrix of the world.
The Mystic Rose is an emblem of our Blessed Mother.
“I was exalted like a palm tree in Cades, and as a rose plant in Jericho” (eccl 24: 16—18)

At the centre of the rose window rests the monogram of the Blessed Virgin. The letters of the name “MARIA” are evident in this ancient symbol. The monogram with the crown and stars placed over it is the symbol of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast is celebrated on Dec. 8.
