15 Jack N addy
In April, 1984, after the death of his wife Marion MacDonald, .Iack Naddy left the property in Orwell he had purchased with his father and moved to Lake Verde to live with his daughter and son-in—law, Mary and Ivan Redmond. He later returned to his home and until his death was caredfor by a couple who lived there with him. He and his wife had raised seven daughters; six are still living.
As he mentions in his account, the Naddys’ second-oldest girl, Faustino, died in childbirth at 19, leaving an infant F austina in her grandparents’ care. He mentions, as well, that he and his wife took in Gloria Shaw as a playmate for the young F austina. What he does not mention is that they also gave a home to another young girl, Linda, afew years later.
Six of the ten women raised by the Naddys, including Linda and Gloria, live in the Lake Verde/Vernon River area today. The others, including F austina, live in or around Toronto.
I built this house. I had carpenters to build it. The man that lived here previous to me, he had his house burnt and he didn’t feel like building another one, so we bought — my father and I — the farm, and we worked it together. I lived with my father, and then, after three years, we built this
house. I had the lumber all ready from the year before. When I got the place up, we got married. My wife just came from across
the river over here, Doug Charlie’s daughter.
Family
So, we raised a family of seven daughters. The first seven children we had, they were all girls, and then the eighth one was a boy. And we were so proud of the boy you know. Our son. He just lived, I think, three months.
