The Hutchinson's Directory of 186h, lists several other shipbuilders at Orwell. Alexander MacRae, shipbuilder and farms. er, Orwell. ’Charles MacDonald, shipbuilder, Orwell. John J. MacDonald, shipbuilder, Orwell. MacQueen mentions Donald "Stone- house“ MacLeod.as having launched several schooners and brigs on the shore of the Stewart farm at Orwell bridge, and John MacQueen and Donald Shaw as having built a schooner at the mouth of Currie's Creek (Orwell River) "as late as the early 60's". This is by no means a complete list of the shipbuilding that went on at Orwell during this busy and prosperous time. but gives an

idea of some of the activity in this small area.

Other occupations were active in OrWell at the time of shipbuilding. The 1864 Directory shows that Robert S. and Hugh Finley has a general store, as did Charles MacLeod and John MacLeod. Donald MacLeod is shown with a general store and post office. and Patrick Stephens is a general dealer, commission merchant, and postmaster. George MacPherson is a blacksmith. and farmer, Malcolm MacLeod a tailor, as are Donald MacLeod and Bernard Laughlan. Edward Morrissey is a tavernkeeper and shoe- maker. By 1871, Donald Nicholson has a tannery at orwell. William Gillis operates the grist mill. Richard Gill a saw and

grist mill, and Moses Peardon is a lime burner. (Lovell's
