-20- roads were bypassed by a road running along the shore and the road through to Orwell Cove, which useato run close to Stewart's house was moved to its present location. Later the roads were graded and gravelled with the construction of the first pavement in l9u8 which pasSed through Orwell to flood Islands. This was followed by the Transéanada Highway in 1957. With improved transportation, Charlottetown became the main center for shopping and other facilities as well. Many people living in Orwell now commute to Charlottetown to work. The roads also allOWed people to come into Orwell more easily. The first venture into the tourist industry in Orwell was made by Art McKenna, who built cabins on the highway opposite McKenna Drive in 1958. When he drowned in 1967, his widow, Catherine McKenna carried on for a time; but the cabins were later moved from the site. Around 1969-70 Ivan and Doris Jood built cabins on their property and opened their home as a farm tourist operation. Farming was affected by change in the 19603 when the Development Plan was enacted. The era of the mixed family farm was then over. Specialization was encouraged —- large dairy farm— ing and potato farming operations were seen as more economically viable. A ratepayers list from 1958 shows that all but two of the residents of Orwell were farmers in 1958. In 1985. there are only two full time farms in operation by resident farmers. The era of.the roads is also the era of consolidation. and Orwell followed Canada into school consolidation in the 1960's.
