John Yorston's father Henry settled in the Grand River (King's County) area of Prince Edward island in the l820s The Yorstons had emigrated to Nova Scotia from the island of Rousay in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Henry was probably a member of the Dartmouth Yorston family where it was sometimes spelled “Austen" or "Yosten". Little is known of Henry's wife - only that she was born in England.

Henry Yosten had three children George, (1830-l909) who married Catherine Currie and became the ancestor of the Little Pond and Launching Yostens; Mary (l83l-19l l) who married Ronald MacRae (1830-1888),son of Alexander MacRae of Cardigan North who had come to Prince Edward Island from Scotland in the latel830's, and John who first married Mary Currie, sister of Catherine, who died in 1859 and was one of those buried in the Launching pioneer cemetery and then lsabella MacRae sister of Ronald. Both Mary's and John's families eventually moved to Georgetown where John was employed as a master-builder in the Gordon shipyard. At his death in 19l5 the Walls carried a description of John Yorston as “a strong man who would "carry a barrel of flour on his back from Cardigan to his home is miles away."
