Students of Natural History in this Province owe a lasting debt of gratitude to two of its Island sons. Francis Bain, whose unpretentious memorial stands in our Parliament Square, left us a greater monument in the delightful books he wrote- John MacSwain later gave us the first claSsified‘ list of our native plants and contributed much to the knowledge of our birds. Not all their conclusions, however, are correct, for these men were handicapped by the faulty text—books of their time; for example, their plants were identified by the use of the sixth edition of Asa Gray’s, Manual, a text—book which was extensively corrected in its seventh:
edition. Nevertheless we justly honor these pioneers of Nature Study.
MacSwain’s list records slightly over 400 species of plants, assigned to their proper families; and in this “New Flora” it must be remembered that all species where there is no distinguishing mark in (brackets, are taken from that list. A great many plants have been found in this Province during the past two decades by local botanists and others, so that the present compilation now includes over 700 species and sub—species; and it maybe that other “finds”. will reward the diligent searcher.
The compiler of the New Flora gratefully acknowledges his obligations to the following botanists for their valued contributions: Dr. W. L. Holman, of the University of Toronto; Prof, Herbert Groh, Botanist, Ottawa, who made a “Plant Survey” of the Island in 1926; Prof. John Adams, Botanist, Ottawa, who investigated the Carexes of the Island in 1937; Prof. W. Reddin, Prince of Wales College; Mr. Harold Messervy, City Surveyor, Charlotte- town; Mr. E. S. Blanchard, Architect, Charlottetown; Mr. E. L. Eaton, of the Experimental Station, P.E.I. ; Mr. Sterling Campbell, of Campbell’s Mills, New Glasgow, RBI; and Mr. Glen Currie.
