In 1969 the theme of the Convention was “Leadership Involvement” and the first Flag march to the stage by the provincial board was held. A brief was presented to the University Planning Commission re U.P.E.I. and the College of Applied Arts. A copy of the Heritage of Canadian Handcraft was given to the Confederation Centre Library. Prizes for singing in the one-room schools were given to the Music Festival Association. Later this was changed to one prize to be given to a deserving rural student in whatever class the Association chooses. A Cook Book committee: Mrs. Evelyn Machon, Mrs. Helen Herring and Leone Ross worked on the “Popular Recipes Cookbook.” LOUISE MARCHBAN K —- PRESIDENT 1969-1971 At the annual convention of the P.E.I. Women’s Institutes in July, 1969, I was elected to the office of President and with the assistance of a most co-operative Board of Directors was able to carry out the duties and responsibilities of our organization. A brief outline of some of the work follows: In August the retiring Provincial Conveners met for a day with the newly elected Conveners to discuss the work of their Convenerships. District Area Conveners were first appointed as a liaison between Local and Provincial Conveners following a change in District Area boun- daries. Dr. Mark Waldron was Resource Person for the very successful Leadership Courses in November, 1969. Also, completed that same fall was the cataloguing of our film strips, and annual meeting time for local W.I.’s was changed from November to September. In the past, retiring presidents had been presented a Life Mem- bership Pin. To this pin was added a gave] to distinguish Past Presi- dents from Life Members. Meetings between Provincial Board and representatives from the Department of Development were held to discuss projects for the Women’s Institute under the Development Plan. The first edition of “The Popular Recipes” was printed in 1969 with Evelyn Machon, Helen Herring and Leone Ross being the cookbook committee. Save Our History Project was a collection of slides, pictures and data of all churches, schools and public buildings on P.E.I. This was compiled by Helen Herring. Mr. Hugh MacKervil, Citizenship Branch of Secretary of State Department held a study session with Board Members to discuss the New Citizenship Act. 8
