1976 - Dr. Leone Ross was nominated as vice-president to represent P.E.I.W.I. on National Board. This year only at the National Convention we will vote for a President and President-Elect. If the new Constitution is adopted after this convention, we will vote only for a President-Elect. 1976 - Program Kit Competition was initiated by the Board in order to get new ideas and share others. Prizes $50, $30 and $20. 1976 - The Provincial Board was asked by the Department of Justice to study and make recommendations on the Report of “Young Persons in Conflict with the Law”. May 1977 - Through a Secretary of State Program we hired two summer students who worked on the projects “NewTrition for Seniors” and “A Family Life Program - In Four Parts”. June 1976 - The PEIWI hosted the FWIC National Convention at UPEI. On opening night a presentation of $1,084.14 Pennies for Friend- ship was made by Margaret Stewart, Provincial Convener of United Nations on behalf of the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institutes to the International President, Mrs. Olive Farquharson. September 1976 - As President, I represented the PEIWI at a luncheon for the Prime Minister, the Hon. Pierre E. Trudeau, at the home of Mr. Prowse Chappell, President of the Federation of Agriculture, and to the brief presented added the concern of the WI in preserving our Island culture as well as our concern about the crime and violence on TV. November 1976 - Quilting Workshops were held in Southport, Crossroads and Kensington with 166 ladies participating. The crib quilts made at the workshops were donated to the Salvation Army. .January 1977 - Convener of Agriculture and President attended a Seminar on Marketing Boards in Amherst sponsored by the Maritime Farmers’ Council. February 1977 - A Land Use Seminar was held by the Board with resource people in attendance. February 1977 - The results of a feasibility study on a School Milk Program done by the Federation of Agriculture was presented to the Board by Jessie Clarey. - 1977 - Col. E.W. J ohnstone’s Special Women’s Institute Competition in the Rural Beautification Program for the removal of derelict buildings was initiated by Col. J ohnstone. April 1977 - The Provincial Board endorsed the principle of the value of seatbelts in motor vehicles and supported the educational program of the Highway Safety in promoting the voluntary use of seat belts. 13
