One needs only to note the progression in the pattern and content of the workshops over the years, from the basic training in meeting management for branch officers to the advanced and sophisticated courses provided by and for the Provincial Board, to realize the growth
of the organization.
The Women’s Institute leaders of the 1980’s face a far more demanding and challenging role than their counterparts in 1913 and
later. They are more confident in their roles. more aware of the wide horizons of Women’s Institutes, and more ready to accept the respon- sibilities as Attitude-Formers and Decision-Makers. They have kept pace with the changing times and have prepared themselves to keep their organization a strong, vital force that commits itself to leadership
for Home and Country. Dr. Leone Ross
EXHIBITION REPORT JEAN MUTCH
In attempting to compile a brief resume of special events, some thoughts come immediately to mind:
- introduction of a special class for school children based on pen- manship for various grades;
- a section of the Food Class for the junior cooks and a special Butter Tart Section sponsored by the Dairyman’s Association;
- a special display of Island Community Histories in Centennial year and original designs in quilts and rugs;
- the Prince Edward Island 4-H Clubs were co-partners with the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institutes for a few years in having their prize list included in the Institute’s annual prize list. In latter years the 4- H display is contained in their Drop-In Centre - adjoining the Women’s
‘Institute Building.
Over the years many changes have been made in the method of receiving the entries. From time to time, the period was extended for the public to view the exhibits. In 1979 the exhibits were on display for Country Days and until Friday evening of Old Home Week.
Highlights of non-competitive displays included Armed Forces exhibit - Air Sea Rescue Unit, CanFarm, Don Messer Feature, Puppet Shows on Safety, Soil and Crop Improvement Association, etc.
The Handcraft Council, for several years was associated with the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institute during the Exhibition featuring both exhibits and sales. Many different crafts were introduced by the Council and their display enhanced the building.
