PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS

At a Federated Women’s Institute of Canada Board meeting follow- ing the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Women’s Institutes, it was recommended that each province establish a Jubilee Endowment Scholarship for Home Economists.

In 1949 a Jubilee Endowment Scholarship of $100.00 was set-up by the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institute for a student working toward a degree in Home Economics and in 1950 the first winner was announced. This scholarship was continued until 1977.

In order to encourage women to become involved in the practice of Law, a $500.00 Law Scholarship was given by the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institutes from 1975-1977 to a woman studying toward a degree in Law.

The Helen Herring Scholarship was set-up and approved by the P.E.I.W.I.. Annual Convention in June 1977 in recognition of the dedicated service given by Helen Herring to the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institutes since the early 1940’s. This $500.00 scholarship, which replaces the Law and Home Economics Scholarships, will be reviewed every two years and offered in a field where the Provincial Board and membership

feel there is the greatest need.

For the 1978 and 1979 two—year term, the Helen Herring Scholarship was offered for a student working towards a degree in Home Economics.
