INSTITUTE NEWS In 1963 Mrs. Frank Bagnall, a competent historian and creative writer assumed the duty of editor. The responsibility of the editor was increasing for the Institutes who had been responsible for supplying material at certain times, no longer continued to do so. When Mrs. Bagnall resigned in December, 1967, Mrs. Harold Laird, who for many years was editor of the Federated News, willingly assumed responsibilities for producing the Institute News for four issues in 1968. Mrs. Mary Baker of Traveller’s Rest and later of Charlottetown assumed the editorship in January 1969. Mrs. Baker brought her skills as a competent reporter, researcher and interviewer into use in producing a top quality publication now reduced to four issues per year because of rapidly rising costs. Due to ill health Mrs. Baker tendered her resignation in June 1973. To meet the deadline for the September issue Mrs. Louise Marchbank and Mrs. Leone Ross co-edited the September issue. Mrs. Marchbank then assumed responsibility for publishing the “News” and has held that position until the present time. The present Institute News has a cover picture mostly of a topic relevant to the Women’s Insitute Work. Each issue contains the President’s letter, news at the F.W.I.C. and A.C.W.W. levels as well as current news within the Province. There is also a section on local Women’s Institutes. Many pictures are also included. Following the National Convention held at Charlottetown 1976 a special Post Con- vention issue of 16 pages was produced with the cover displaying the theme of the Convention “Focus” (Usually the issues contain 8 pages). The News is printed four times a year and distributed to every Women’s Institute member plus a special mailing list. The cost of the subscription to the News is included in the members’ annual fees. Copies of our national paper the Federated News are included with the Provincial Board mailing to each Local Women’s Institute. Some of our Women’s Institute members subscribe to “The Countrywoman” an A.C.W.W. publication which helps keep one up—to—date on International affairs. NOTES AND NEWS—A MONTHLY PUBLICATION Provincial Board mail is prepared in the Farm and Home Management Section of the Department of Agriculture & Forestry, and mailed to the Local Women’s Institute on or before the 23rd of the month for the following month’s meeting, except for July and August. Included in this packet will be information on the current work of the Women’s Institute such as notification of Conventions, Workshops, Competitions etc. as well as “Notes and News” - a paper reminding or informing the membership about important matters. It is very useful as a contact for the conveners. Louise Marchbank Editor 33
