We recommend (1) that Section 5A of the Jury Act and the related Form A be repealed so that women will be subject to the same jury duty as men; (2) that the exemptions granted to citizens under Section 5 of the Jury Act be reviewed carefully with the view to repealing some of the categories under which citizens may receive an exemption; (3) that any single parent caring for children under the age of 12 be eligible for an exemption; and (4) that women with children under the age of 2 years be eligible for an exemption.
We recommend (1) that the Jury Act be amended by specifying that jury lists must reflect the proportion of males and females in each county, within a 10% range of freedom, the ratio of males and females in each county to be deter- mined by the latest available Census data; and (2) that failure to maintain such a proportion in the selection of the lists be sufficient reason to disquality the entire list for any particular assize.
We recommend (1) that Section 25 (i) of “An Act to Amend the Prince Edward Island Election Act, 1963” (1967), be repealed immediately; and (2) that the following be sub- stituted in its place:
“The enumerators shall, on the preliminary list of electors as indicated on Forms 9 and 9A, register the Christian name and surname, occupation, and post office address of all eligible electors in the polling division, without indicating the marital status of any person on the list. Wherever the oc— cupation of an elector involves the full-time care of a home with or without children, the occupation shall be registered as homemaker, and wherever an elector, because of age, no longer pursues a full-time occupation, the word “retired” may precede the listing of the occupation.”
We recommend (1) that all legislation in the province should use masculine pronouns only where the male alone is in— tended; (2) that legislation applying to all persons be written in an impersonal and asexual terminology; and ( 3) that this recommendation apply to both new legislation and the current revision of all existing legislation.
We recommend that the Province of Prince Edward Island request the Federal Department of Manpower and Im- migration to organize a Conference on Opportunities for Women with delegates from the Province of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
