Directors Alumni COOK BOOKS The first Women’s Institute Cook Book was suggested at an executive meeting by Mrs. Walter Leard who served as Provincial President 1939—1941. This Cook Book “Home Recipes” was compiled by the Women’s Institute of Prince Edward Island from home recipes contributed by individual members. Added features were sections on Canning, Household Hints, School Lunch Box and a Tourist Section. The cover of this first edition was coloured Blue and Gold and had the Institute Crest on it, at the bottom of the cover was printed the price of 50¢. In 1943 another edition of 5000 copies was printed with a similar cover and many of the same recipes. Also included was a war time sect- ion offering suggestions for substitutions for foods, which were scarce during the war 1940-1945. This book included advertisements of many well known businesses across Prince Edward Island. A new revised edition of Home Recipes was printed in 1958, because a fire in the Women’s Institute office in September, 1957, destroyed all the contents including the supply of cook books. Mrs. Aubrey Cutcliffe, Fredericton was Chairman of the cook book committee and the third edition of Home Recipes was compiled during Mrs. Jean Wilkie’s term as provincial president 1957-59. The sales of these books at $1.00 per copy began the following term 1959-1961 when Mrs. Florence Matheson was provincial President. It is regrettable no information is available on the number of cook books that were printed. 43
