As the scene entitled “World War One” began, the curtain opened to reveal a group of women knitting and sewing for the men overseas. The Women’s Institute chorus, together with the Hillsboro Men’s Chorus, sang several songs popular at the time. President Speaks The President of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada, Mrs. James Haggerty of Napanee, Ontario, addressed the audience in the fourth episode. The subject of Mrs. Haggerty’s address was “Kindle a Fire”. She compared the members of the Institute to “stokers”, who keep a fire burning after it has been lighted by others. Mrs. Haggerty told the audience that she had been one of the judges in the Carol Lane Safety Award contest, and paid tribute to Marshfield Women’s Institute, which won the Dominion-wide competition. The next international conference of Associated Country Women of the World will be held in Dublin, Ireland, in 1965, Mrs. Haggerty told the delegates. Education Theme During the episode depicting the Women’s Institutes contribution to education on the Island, the awarding of the first home economics scholarship was recreated. Mrs. Ian MacLeod the former Dorothy Baxter, once again accepted her “scholarship” in the same place the award had originally been made. A slide of Montgomery Hall, built largely through the influence of the Women’s Institute was shown. In the health and welfare segment, the story of how the Women’s Institute groups had worked towards the construction of the Provincial Sanitorium was told. The Sherwood Women’s Institute depicted a group of women working for the war effort in the “World War Two” scene. Once again the chorus sang three war-time songs. The Women’s Institute was highly instrumental in initiating the music festival on the Island in 1946. Marking this event, a chorus sang “We Praise Our God” and “Sweet and Low”. The Drama Festival, too, was a Women’s Institute project. Mrs. Harold Laird and Mrs. Leslie Ramsay, in a dramatic scene, explained how these beginnings had been made. One of the Women’s Institute’s most recent moves in this field was the obtaining of a provincial drama director several years ago. Fashion Show The Bunbury Women’s Institute staged a short fashion show next, typifying an achievement day which follows a course given in a district by the provincial handicraft directors. 46
