Following an intermission and collection for an Associated Country Women of the World fund, the pageant resumed with the address by Mrs. Geerda Van Beekoff, president of the Associated Country Women of the World. Mrs. Van Beekoff related many of her personal experiences as international president. In this capacity she must travel widely, and is now spending one week in each province of Canada. She told the audience something of life in Holland during the Second World War, and how much the arrival of Canadian and American troops had meant to the citizens of that country. Public Relations A brief episode entitled “Public Relations” told the audience about the weekly Women’s Institute radio program over CFCY, the Institute News, edited by Mrs. Norman MacMillan, and the Federated News, edited by an Island Women’s Institute member, Mrs. Harold Laird. In describing the Tweedsmuir Competitions, Mrs. Herring pointed out with pride that Island Women’s Institute members had won two first prizes and an honorable mention at the 1961 competitions at Victoria, BC. First prize for hand-hooked chair seats went to Mrs. MacQuarrie; for a one-act play, to Mrs. Townshend; and the honorable mention was awarded to the Hunter River Women’s Institute for village history. Various Island Women’s Institute projects overseas include the adoption of an Island in the West Indies, a son in India, and sending sewing machines to Ceylon, the audience were told in the “hands across the sea” episode. Women’s Institute have contributed a great deal to 4-H clubs on the Island, and the last episode told about this. Miss Diana Rodd and Miss Enid Coles sang the 4-H pledge. Pageant Ends The pageant concluded with three brief speeches by Mrs. Mac— Millan, representing “pride in the past”, Mrs. Lincoln Dewar, representing “enthusiasm for the present”, and Miss Joyce Lowther, representing “faith in the future.” Following the “Mary Stewart Collect”, Mrs. Nancy Cox sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” The session closed with “God Save the Queen”. OUR SIXTIETH YEAR By LEONE ROSS 1973 was a memorable year for the Women’s Institutes of Prince Edward Island. True, it was the Centennial of Confederation for our province, but it was also the Diamond Jubilee of the founding of our organization. 47
