A pretty birthday cake flanked by lighted tapers adorned a table at the front of the auditorium.
Many pictures were taken for mementos of the occasion.
Mrs. Fred Gates, Past-president 1941-1943 cut the cake and served the National President, Mrs. Bielish. Board members and District Area Presidents distributed cakes with a candle to all those present. The candles were then lighted and all sang Happy Birthday. A poem was composed and read by Anne MacFarlane.
The party closed by singing “The Queen.” Louise Marchbank
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CENTENNIAL PROJECT 1964
In 1964 Prince Edward Island Women’s Institutes prepared a very special project to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the historic meeting to discuss Confederation of the Provinces at Charlot- tetown in 1864.
This project was called One Hundred Years of Island Crafts and Island Homes.
Several hundred articles, many valuable, antique and prized, were loaned for exhibit at Recreation Centre, Richmond Street.
Special tables and easels were made to make an attractive display.
Helen Herring was convener of the committee and supervised the exhibit which was open from June to September. Guest books were kept and these showed signatures from many parts of the world and all were fascinated by the articles displayed.
Some of the outstanding exhibits were a grandfather clock, man’s woven suit made from Island flax, churns, washers and other household items of yesteryear, wedding dresses, christening dresses, quilts, mats, crocheted work, knitting, tatting and other crafts.
Mrs. Hattie Cutcliffe, Barbara Flanagan and Margaret Mutch assisted as part-time guides.
It is interesting to note that not one article was lost or damaged during the two-month exhibit.
By displaying articles that portrayed Island life during our first century of Confederation, the P.E.I. Women’s Institutes in a unique way contributed to this centennial year.
