The first Cancer Clinic to be held on Prince Edward Island took place at Western Hospital on October 26, 1978. Members of Alberton Women’s Institute assisted by promoting interest and by providing refreshments. Because of the success of this clinic, a second one was held in April 1979. The cooperation of Dr. Morrisey and Dr. Sethi, along with the staff of Western Hospital, resulted in two worthwhile clinics. ALBERRY PLAINS WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Alberry Plains Women’s Institute was organized in 1936. It is active in all phases of Women’s Institute work. Three charter members are still here - some have moved elsewhere or passed away. Seven have been given Life Membership. A charter member, Louise MacMillan, was elected Provincial President in 1977. We co—operate with the Vernon River Lions Club, the local 4-H, and the AY groups in many of their endeavors. The school, youth groups, the ill and elderly are uppermost in many programs. One of our members, Frances MacMillan, arranged for a cancer information meeting in our convention area in 1978. Martina and Mary Doyle, and Rita Stewart are very active in local and district 4-H work. Centennial Year programs were enjoyed and several Women’s Institute anniversaries were celebrated. ALLISTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Alliston Women’s Institute was first organized in the mid 1920’s. This group disbanded after several years and started up again during World War II. We have been a going concern since then. We published a Centennial Cookbook in 1967. In 1973, when our rural school became part of Southern King’s Consolidation, we held a reunion for everyone who had ever gone to or taught in this school. For our Diamond Jubilee we invited all members who had ever belonged to the Institute to a supper meeting. Probably our greatest achievement in our years in the community was organizing and supervising a self-supporting milk program for Southern Kings Consolidated school. In this program we have had fine co—operation from many parents and the principal, teachers and secretary of the school. THE BEACH POINT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE THROUGH THE YEARS 1964-1979. The Beach Point Women’s Institute, the Queen Elizabeth branch, was reorganized in December 1963, with the monthly meetings being held at the local school. 54
