Eileen Manderson was made a Life Member of the Women’s Institute and given the Heritage Plaque to place in her new home. Mrs. Man- derson again brought honor to the Women’s Institute and community by being chosen “Woman of the Year” at the 1977 Summerside Lobster Carnival and Livestock Exhibition. The Branch was privileged to have one of its members, Mary MacLean serve on the Provincial Board for ten years, two of which she was provincial president 1975-1977. This stimulated interest and kept the members in closer contact with provincial, national and international activities. In December 1977 the 60th Anniversary of the Women’s Institute was celebrated with a dinner for members and husbands at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Lyle when Mary MacLean showed slides of an African Safari and the ACWW Conference in Nairobi, Kenya where she represented the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institute as a delegate in October. COVEHEAD ROAD WOMEN’S INSTITUTE HISTORY 1971 — Entered the Provincial Safety Competition, sponsored by the Prince Edward Island Safety Council, and placed third for Queen’s County. 1975 — Entered the same competition in co-operation with Stanhope and West Covehead Women’s Institutes and took top honors for Queen’s County. 1971 — Celebrated 40th anniversary. Charter members attending were: Doris Birt and Lettie MacDonald (active members) and Sadie Birt, Lois MacDonald and Marion (Brown) Marshall. 1979 — Charter Member Doris Birt was presented with a Life Membership pin after serving 48 years as a faithful and only active charter member. Margaret (Wooldridge) Ellis was also honored with a Life Membership for 38 years of service. Spring 1979 also saw the completion of the community history, called “Covehead Road People and Places”. CROSS ROADS W.I. Cross Roads organized with surrounding districts as the Mac- Donald W.I. on June 23, 1916. Division became advisable and in 1942 Cross Roads, Southport and Bunbury each became a separate Institute looking after the needs of their respective districts.
