Members have won many awards. In 1972, a Red Cross Safety Award. In 1973, won second place award in Community History Competition. They placed second for a Kit called “Mature Years”. An individual member, Mrs. Robert Williams, has knitted for Red Cross for sixty-four years - truly a remarkable record.
This Institute bought their community school and use it as a Community Centre.
Five members have been given life memberships. An annual Halloween party is held for children and Remembrance Day is suitably commemorated by this active Institute.
Safety has been highlighted with defensive driving course, babysitting course and first aid courses being sponsored at the new centre.
New Annan Institute members actively support the annual roadside clean up each year.
These are just some of the many worthwhile programs carried out by the Institute Members of New Annan.
HIGHLIGHTS OF NEW GLASGOW WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
The members of the New Glasgow Women’s Institute are a very energetic group of ladies and have been involved in the usual com- munity activities. They remember the elderly, sick and shut-ins, contribute to many worthy projects, cater to weddings and luncheons and since 1977 have held a “Meet Your Neighbor Night” each year.
Some centennial projects were: - Had “Welcome to New Glasgow" signs placed on all roads leading to the community. Made a centennial quilt and gave it to the Protestant Children’s Home. Had a W.I. program with a tape of Father Bolger’s Centennial Lecture.
Other activites included sponsoring a Bicycle Safety Course in- volving ninety-six children, Defensive Driving Course and First Aid and Refresher Courses.
Life Memberships were presented to honor some members on
their Wedding Anniversaries over the years .- 55 years - Mrs. Percy Dickinson, a charter member 50 years - Mrs. Walfield Orr - Mrs. Blair Andrew - Mrs. Wallace Dickinson - Mrs. Willard Nicholson also charter members - Miss Elsie Laird and Mrs. Paul Richardson were honored as well.
