Work for Home and Country continues in this branch of seventeen members (1979) - seven of which are life members and Miss Muriel Haslam is a charter member. The children, now attending a regional school in Kensington, are helped by hot lunch programs, donating library books and year-end prizes. The Community Hall received a new look inside and out during 1966. Other community projects are the supporting of the picnic area, “The Commons”, donations (teacher’s chair and blankets) for the Day Care Centre in Kensington, and a television set to the Rehabilitation Centre in Charlottetown.
The booklet “Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Island’s Lady of Stories” was compiled and published by the ladies of the Women’s Institute in 1973. Committee responsible: Mrs. Reginald Haslam, Mrs. Crawford Sinclair and Mrs. Keith Mayne.
This group visited many industries, galleries, parks, plays, concerts to broaden their minds and for entertainment.
STAN HOPE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
From 1963 onwards, the activities of this branch have included supplying “extras” for the Primary room of Stanhope School, giving the children treats at Christmas, and subsidizing the school picnic; in 1978 we also helped to furnish a sitting room and kitchenette for the teachers. We have continued to visit the sick and shut-ins, and newcomers to the district. Members also visit everyone in Stanhope over 80 on his or her birthday with a cake and gift, and we welcome new babies with a present. We support the P.E.I. Music Festival and the Heritage Foundation, and contribute to a number of charities, and Women’s Institute projects. At Christmas we visit a nursing home to sing carols, serve a lunch, and talk with the patients. We enjoy our “Secret Pals” gift exchange through the year and especially at Christmas.
This group has organized various safety programs, such as bicycle “rodeos” for children and defensive driving courses for adults; also Red Cross Water Safety programs for our youngsters and Red Cross First Aid classes. In 1967 we received a first prize of $75 for our entry in
