the P.E.I. Safety Council’s competition; this was a booklet outlining various safety projects carried out by our branch, the main item being the creation of a new playground for the children of Stanhope School, away from road traffic, on land leased from Parks Canada. Our President at that time, Mrs. Edward Power, acted as foreman to the workmen on this project and it was largely due to her efforts that the playground was completed on time. We continue our commitment to the Stanhope-Covehead Community Hall, raising funds for such things as fireproofing, red exit signs, fire extinguishers, and supplying small fur- nishings.
In 1967 our play “Scott meets Acadian” based on local history and written by Mrs. George Simpson, tied for first place provincially and came second out of 11 plays nationally in the Tweedsmuir Competition. We are currently working on a History Kit for the 1979 handcraft section; our afghan won first prize in the 1978 Provincial Competition, as did an essay on the subject “Let Age be no Barrier” written by one of our senior citizens for the 1978 Creative Writing Competition.
In 1978, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a party at Dalvay- by-the—Sea, for members, former members, residents and summer residents of Stanhope and their husbands and friends. We were honoured by the presence of our Provincial President and members of the Provincial Board, and over 100 guests enjoyed refreshments and a social evening of conversation and reminiscence. It was a great celebration and we are all geared up for the next 50 years!
Later - in 1979 this Institute won first prize in the FWIC History competition and honourable mention in the afghan competition.
STERLING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE STANLEY BRIDGE 1963—1979
Sterling Women’s Institute, Stanley Bridge, was one of the In- stitutes organized in 1913.
They call the years 1963 to 1978 their Real Estate Years.
The first property purchased was a property belonging to a Mrs. MacGregor. It has been aptly named The Swimming Rock. The cot- tage was repaired, a parking lot paved, the whole area cleaned and trees trimmed.
This project won a first prize of $50. for improving Women’s Institute Holdings.
A new 4 x 8 sign, put up in 1963, proclaimed the Swimming Rock as property of Sterling Women’s Institute, organized - 1913.
Hundreds of children and adults have taken swimming lessons here. It was a safe and beautiful setting and it is regrettable that due to vandalism, the cottage was sold in 1976. Sterling Institute for many years were owners of the rink and used it as a community centre.
