The need for expensive renovations was the reason the Institute members decided to sell this building and have it moved from the property. As part of the rink deal, Sterling Institute became owners of the Farmer’s League Trophy for Winners of Old Timers games at Ken- sington Community Gardens. This Trophy was lost in the Garden’s first on December 1, 1977. In April, 1977 Sterling Women’s Institute purchased the school for $376. Their latest acquisition came through the purchase of the Masonic Hall for $2,000. It is being repaired and this Historic Building will be preserved in the community. Surely Congratulations are in order for Sterling Women’s In- stitute, Stanley Bridge for their unique position as land and real estate owners. MAPLE LEAF - TRAVELLER’S REST W.I. Safety has been one of the chief concerns to the members of Traveller’s Rest Women’s Institute. As a result directional signs and lights were installed where needed and improvements made on the Traveller’s Rest hill, for which prizes were won in Safety Com- petitions. The Women’s Institute also participated in other projects concerning home and school. In 1964 the Women’s Institute had Centennial projects beautifying their hall and school grounds. They also had a member win third prize in Kensington Centennial Parade and made a Centennial quilt. In 1973 they compiled a history of Traveller’s Rest District. What was originally the Traveller’s Rest Hall property was deeded to the Traveller’s Rest Women’s Institute, who proceeded to have the dilapidated old building torn down. In June, 1976, the Women’s Institute members had the grounds landscaped, a flagpole was erected and a sign “Traveller’s Rest Memorial Grounds” was put in place. It was designated as a park and a picnic table was set on the site. A “meet your neighbor picnic” was held on the grounds in August 1978 and Women’s Institute members received such favorable com- ments that they decided to make this an annual event in the com- munity. In 1977 the Traveller’s Rest school property adjacent to the Memorial Grounds was purchased. These two parcels of land together ensure our growing community of always having a place for fun and recreation. 64
