The members also participated in many Health projects: a donation to Mammography machine, and Prince County Hospital Equipment Fund; entertaining residents at Summerset Manor and sponsoring a lecture on Cancer. One of our members, Mary Baker, brought honor to our midst when she won two National Awards (see National Awards) for Plays and Hon- orable Mention for an Essay Another of our members, Louise Marchbank has served on the Provincial Board since 1963 serving as Provincial President 1969-1971. WHEATLEY RIVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE 1963-1979 In 1976 Wheatley River Women’s Institute Members suitably celebrated fifty years of service, by holding a banquet. At this time the history of this local Institute was read and recalled many highlights. In 1971 a piano was purchased for the school. Almost every Institute project has received financial support from Wheatley River Institute. They had Women’s Institute Welcome signs erected at ap- proaches to the community and individual Women’s Institute signs were placed at member’s homes. They plant flowers, trees and shrubs at the War Memorial and keep surroundings as attractive as possible. Third prize was won in Beautification Contest for Wheatley River Cemetery, entered by the Institute. Two prizes have been received for Kit Competitions: (1) Romance of the Turnip, (2) History Kit - History of Wheatley River. In 1978 the President, Mrs. Roswetha Tarvis was selected as winner of the Nuffield Scholarship and left for England in February 1979. The Community Hall has been the main interest of this Institute during recent years. It has been completely remodelled and road paved in parking area. These energetic ladies continue to work for the improvement of their community and province. ROYAL OAK INSTITUTE - WHITE SANDS Royal Oak Institute actively participated in Northumberland Rink Project by financial donations. One of their members, Helen Nicolle (Mrs. Roy) was chosen “Women of the Year” in 1977. This group continues to be a dynamic force in their community. ST. PETER’S WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The first Women’s Institute was organized in St. Peter’s in 1913, but lasted only two or three years. This group comprised both North and South St. Peter’s. 65
