Officers were: President, Mrs. John Larkin; Secretary, Florence MacSwain; Treasurer, Mrs. Dan Mullen.

On October 23, 1923, Miss Helen Harper, Supervisor, helped to organize St. Peter’s South and St. Peter’s North, separately. These

two groups functioned separately until 1953, when they joined forces, and became known as the St. Peter’s Women’s Institute.

St. Peter’s South began with 18 members and the first officers were: President, Mrs. Peter Power, Secretary-Treasurer, Miss Mary Gillis.

Records of St. Peter’s North are unavailable.

Over the years equipping and maintaining the school was the major concern. To pay for these projects, the Women’s Institute sponsored dances, staged local plays and concerts. These were always very popular and well attended.

Even in the early years proper nutrition was important to the ladies of St. Peter’s. In 1925 they purchased a steamer for the one room school for serving hot school lunches.

Besides donating to the regular Women’s Institute sponsored projects and community charities, they supported financially, a dental clinic which visited this community starting in 1936.

They also shared in the purchase of a projector for community use.

One of the major projects has been the support, both financially and in the upkeep of our village library. It was first organized in 1933, and has remained in this community ever since. As a matter of fact, it has the largest turnover of books next to Charlottetown and Sum- merside.

St. Peter’s entered the Carol Lane Safety Contest, and won this award in 1969.

In recent years, our main focus of attention is on the library and giving treats to the children in the elementary school both at Christ- mas and at the end of the school year. In addition, we support any worthwhile community project. e.g. Rural Beautification Society, Red Cross Swimming Classes, Minor Hockey and raise money by catering to banquets, pantry sales, etc.

Life Memberships have been presented, during special occasions, to three of our members, two of whom are charter members.

Our group remains active and interested and we are fortunate in getting some new members We also appreciate the efforts of our provincial conveners in providing educational program packets for use during our meetings.
