provincial convention as well as representing our membership on many and varied occasions. My first ‘special’ visit was to Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A. to attend the Country Women’s Council Meeting there, in 1964. I represented FWIC in Ottawa on many occasions, perhaps the most important was the raising of the new Canadian Flag in 1965. I was guest of EXPO ’67 at the opening on Women’s Day. In company with Mrs. George Clarke, we presented Mrs. Mit- chener with a copy of our “history” at Rideau Hall, Ottawa. I led the Canadian delegation to the A.C.W.W. Conference in Dublin, Ireland in 1965. These are the highlights of my term as President of F.W.I.C. and all activities were attended by much organization, much correspon- dence and travel with the end result of much enjoyment and memories for a lifetime. FEDERATED WOMEN’S INSTITUTE OF CANADA BEATRICE REEVES 1919-1979, sixty years later, delegates from across Canada travelled to Saskatoon to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and to honour those wo- men who work “For Home and Country”. Membership has declined in the past few years but with special emphasis on membership and better programming the tide seems to be turning. The purposes and objectives of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada are; 1. to co-ordinate programmes of the Units. 2. to provide a medium of intercommunication among the Units. 3. to promote an appreciation of rural living. 4. to develop better informed, more responsible citizens, through study of issues of National and International importance. 5. to initiate nation—wide programmes in accordance with the objects of the Federation. Constitution and By-law changes now give each Province direct representation on the Executive as well as being represented on the Board by two members. The Executive member, appointed by the Province, has a direct responsibility to keep her Province informed and relay Provincial programs and concerns to National. The National Office in Ottawa has been well maintained and attractively re-furbished. A pocket size brochure with information about F.W.I.C. was printed and circulated by the Office, this was a positive public relations promotion. In 1978 because of increased demands on the Organization the Board determined a need for a person capable of assisting the Executive in Research work. In 1979, an Executive Secretary, Mrs. Janet Morgan, was hired and she will also assume responsibility for the editing of the Federated News. 70
