The meeting opened with the singing of O Canada! after which Mrs. MacFarlane gave a brief but warm welcome.
The official welcome to the Convention was extended by the Honourable Thomas McNutt, Minister of Agriculture in Prince Edward Island. He expressed the greatest admiration for the work of the Women’s Institutes and cordially welcomed the Women’s Institute members from the other provinces.
Mrs. H. MacGregor, First Vice-President of the F.W.I.C., of Penticton, British Columbia, made a gracious reply.
Mrs. Walker then gave an earnest address in which she stressed the wise use of leisure and made strong pleas for the consistent and persistent pursuit of world peace.
Mrs. Lancefield, Corresponding Secretary F.W.I.C., read the
reply of their Majesties, King George and Queen Mary, to the message of congratulations sent them on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee.
Mrs. Walker called attention to the Jubilee Medal presented to her as President of the F.W.I.C.
Brief greetings were brought from the provinces by the following representatives: British Columbia, Mrs. H. MacGregor, Penticton; Alberta, Mrs. J.P. Ferguson, Trochu; Saskatchewan, Mrs. R.J. McAuslan, Adanac; Manitoba, Mrs. T.A. Bulloch, ROSser; Ontario, Mrs. R.B. Colloton, Lorne Park; Quebec, Mrs. F.S. Browne, Len- noxville; New Brunswick, Mrs. Ashley George, Upper Sackville; Nova Scotia, Mrs. Sanford, Coldbrook.
Mrs. J .P. Ferguson, President of Alberta Women’s Institutes, gave an account of the machinery of the organization in that province and the functions of each part. The methods of financing were clearly outlined. This proved interesting to the Convention as Alberta Women’s Institutes received no Government assistance financially.
Mrs. Cohoe was asked to give a few highlights on the Peace Garden.
The meeting adjourned so that the delegates might attend a reception in Government House.
Mrs. A.E. Walker presided at the joint session on Wednesday evening.
