Our Director of Women’s Work, Elizabeth Grimmett, gave many hours of overtime work in helping to arrange all the details. Registration began on June 20 and the Official Opening was held at Confederation Centre of the Arts at 7:30 pm. with the National President, Mrs. J .A. McLean presiding. The Prince Edward Island Women’s Institute President, Mrs. Mary MacLean, extended a warm welcome to approximately 1,000 people in attendance. Under the theme — “Focus”; “Facing our Challenge Unity is Strength” the President of F.W.I.C., Dr. Ellen McLean, spoke to the dele- gates at the Official opening in Confederation Center of the Arts on June 20, 1976. The keynote speaker, Mrs. Olive Farquharson, O.B.E., President of A.C.W.W., gave a very interesting and inspiring address on the topic — “Facing our Challenges.” Another guest speaker, Mrs. Agnes Higgins, spoke on Nutrition and the Montreal Diet Dispensary. Also during the Convention, Convener’s reports told the story of the work of the Women’s Institutes over the past three years. Workshop discussion sessions were held on the following topics: Land Use, Strengthening the Family Unit, Our Heritage, The Role of Women, Rural - Urban Communications, Man and Resources and F.W.I.C. New Directions. To conclude the convention, a reception was held in the Memorial Hall of Confederation Centre, Charlottetown at 6:45 pm. followed by a banquet, guests of the Government of Prince Edward Island. Mrs. Elizabeth Grimmett was Chairman. Dr. A.E. Ings, Minister of Agriculture, brought greetings from the province. Guest speaker was Dr. F.W.P. Bolger, History Department, University of Prince Edward Island, who, in a delightful and entertaining manner, told of the life of Lucy Maude Montgomery, author of the “Anne” books, and drawing a direct correlation between her writings and the history and develop- ment of the Island. He was introduced by Mrs. Leone Ross and thanked by Mrs. McLean. Mrs. McLean then expressed her appreciation to the Government of Prince Edward Island and to the members of the P.E.I. Convention Committee and to everyone who had helped to make the convention a success. She thanked the WI members across Canada for the op- portunity they had given her, and the privilege which had been hers. She presented the incoming President, Mrs. Bielish, with the President’s pin and in return was presented with the F.W.I.C. Life Membership pin by Mrs. Bielish. The evening concluded with the final performance by a mixed choir, later called the Tea Hill Choristers, who organized especially for our Convention and performed each day during the Convention. Choir Director was Mrs. Margaret (Ralph) Douglas of Crossroads. 79
