8 SETTLEMENTS OF THE called Swedeland, and on which they made settle¬ ments, and built forts. The first settlement in was formed in 1628, by Captain John Endicot , who set¬ tled there with his wife. Plymouth, which was annexed in 1691, was previously a separate colony. Lord Baltimore , who established a colony at ¬ foundland some time before, commenced settling Maryland in 1633. Settlements were also formed in North Carolina in 1628 ; in Connecticut and Rhode Island in 1635 ; in New Jersey (part of Nether¬ lands) and in Vermont about 1664. In the year 1669, plantations were made in South Carolina ; and the celebrated Mr Locke drew up a system of laws for its government. A regular, just, and prudent plan of colonization was commenced by William Penn , in 1682, under the right of a royal charter. He purchased the land from the Indians, whose attachment he secured ; and his colony, which he named Pennsylvania , prospered more rapidly, and with more certain security of success, than any pre¬ viously attempted. His measures were wise and just, and his character and example will ever be regarded with esteem and admiration.* From this period the settlement of pro¬ ceeded with astonishing rapidity.
