and Blanche Cairns. Jean had a noon time special every day; all the baking was done in the mobile home behind the restaurant where the Simmons lived. Popular home made items at the restaurant were cinnamon rolls, biscuits, rolls, pies, upside down cake, rice pudding, tapioca, and apple crisp. The restaurant was closed Christmas day and sometimes New Years Day but open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, from 8 am. to 11 pm. seven days a week. Simmons Restaurant was always spotless, especially the stainless steel milk dispenser. Employees were trained by Jean, and everyone knew their job and did it pleasantly. Harold assisted out front, cleaning and setting tables and working on the cash.17

Bed and Breakfast

Several North Tryon families including the Inmans, Lefurgeys, Dixons, and Woods, have operated a Bed and Breakfast business.

Gertrude and Wilfred Inman catered to visitors in the 19305 at their home, Westview Lodge, at Chisholm’s Comer. Mrs. Inman became well known for the delicious meals she served her guests. Georgie and Max Lefurgey welcomed guests to Pleasant View Farm, situated on a hill overlooking North Tryon. Florence and Sheldon Dixon provided lodg- ing at Dixon’s Overnight Tourist Home beginning in 1965. Many friend- ships were made and through word of mouth new guests arrived each year until the Dixons retired in 1987. Ione and George Wood also hosted summer visitors from 1972 to 1978.18
