The North Tryon Women's Institute undertook a major community clean up and beautification project in 1977. Workers were hired with the assistance of Works and Young Canada Works funding. The Presbyterian Church and manse, the Tryon United Baptist Church, hall, and parsonage, the Westmoreland United Baptist Church, the North Tryon School, and the Tryon Consolidated School all received a face lift and many dilapidated buildings in the area were demolished. John Muttart was the project foreman, lone Wood the treasurer, and Hazel Robinson the sponsor representative. Workers on the projects included: Ernest White , Ruth Walsh , Flo Fall , Morley Newsome , Billy Mitchell, Joyce Fall , Debbie Thomas, Rita Mclvor , and Janet Cairns . The efforts of the Institute were recognized at the Prince Edward Island Rural Beautification Banquet and Awards Night when the Colonel Edward Johnson Special Award of $1000.00, first place in the Prince County Individual School and Community Building Improvement Competition with an Award of $250.00, and first place in the Commu¬ nity Beautification Contest with an Award of $300.00 were presented to the North Tryon Women's Institute. This money was placed in a certificate of deposit at the bank and provided the funding necessary to begin work on this, our second community history. 108
