4-H Club
Nettie Callbeck, and her daughter, Margaret Johnson, led a 4—H group in the community in the 1930s, assisted by the Department of Agriculture and the North Tryon Women’s Institute. Young girls were instructed by these ladies in all aspects of home-making using the provincial 4—H programs. They learned to cook, sew, knit, and crochet. Many took advantage of this organization.4
A 4—H Calf Club was formed in 1949 and met at the Tryon Consoli- dated School. Max Thompson was the Holstein leader and practice judging was done at his farm. Lou Roper and Dave Peacock from the Department of Agriculture visited the Club to give them assistance. Achievement Day was held at the Tryon Consolidated School and first, second, and third place winners went to Charlottetown to compete provincially, unlike today when every entry goes to town.
The Shorthom Club was formed the same year with leaders Ken Robblee and Austin Smith. Practice judging took place at the farms of these gentlemen. Sterling Wood, Stewart Wright, and Dave Peacock were the Department of Agriculture representatives.5
4—H was reorganized in 1963 under the leadership of Ione Wood and Ethel Thomson with the support of the Women’s Institute. Meet- ings were held in the big room at the school where the girls were taught basic sewing, knitting, and crocheting skills. Some of the members were Elaine and Grace Cairns, Erith Craig, Debbie Dawson, Lynn Dawson, Susan Dawson, Marion Kay Dixon, Debbie Howatt, Jo Ann Mitchell, Neva Quigley, Marlene Thomas, Dawn Thomson, and Donalda Wood.
