An outing to Stanley Dawson’s Store in the 19305 proved to be rather embarrassing for the teacher. The school children were lined up on the steps of Dawson’s Store waiting to welcome Lord and Lady Baden Powell who were passing through North Tryon. The teacher had told the students about this distinguished British couple who had started the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements. Heath Delaney was one of the younger students anxiously awaiting the arrival. Heath was very sensitive about his red hair and his freckles and was frequently teased by his school mates. said: “My what a lot of freckles you have little boy!” Heath, whose feelings were hurt, retaliated with a quick “You kith my ath, Lady!” Needless to say, the teacher didn’t take kindly to Heath’s remark, but it was a great source of amusement for the dignitaries.
