Flood?
A Chilling Dip
The Thomson family lived across the brook and each spring the children looked forward to the fun they would have when the ice left the water. The spring freshet made boating in whatever would float very exciting, however the spring of 1940 almost brought tragedy. Minnie Thomson was at the clothes line hanging out her wash. Elizabeth, her baby, was asleep in the house, and the children could be heard playing by the stream. Suddenly their laughter turned to cries for help and their mother went running.
Raymond, age three, had fallen into the stream and had disappeared from sight. Minnie immediately jumped into the frigid water among the barbed wire and debris but could not locate her son. The frantic children, very concerned for their mother’s safety, were calling “Leave him Mom, get out of the water and leave him!” when a mitten came floating to the top of the water. Minnie reached under and came up with a little boy who was black and lifeless. Putting him on the bank of the stream, she untied the cap he was wearing, and to her surprise, Raymond took a great gulp of air and opened his eyes. Apparently the cap had been choking him and had prevented water from entering his windpipe. Neither Minnie nor her son, Raymond, suffered any ill effects from the adventure, in fact “neither took a sniffle”!
Haunted House
A haunted house, last owned by Walter Bell and situated a stones throw from the village, added mystery and intrigue to the area. Folk lore has it that a pack peddler was murdered in one of the upstairs bedrooms and later buried in the basement. Several people who have slept in this room over the years saw strange shadows, heard strange noises, and experienced the constant pulling of the bed clothing as if an unseen hand were present. The latest report was that of the kitchen light going off and on, off and on, very mysteriously. A neighbor who was visiting late one evening became so disturbed that he broke out in a cold sweat and took off for home as if jet propelled.
The haunted house burned in 1988, putting the ghosts to rest.4
