Mad Killer A frightening experience happened to Norman Wood in the 1950s which spread panic in the district. It was the time several farmers saw the Mad Killer from the West in a tell-tale brown leather jacket prowling about during the day. That night at dusk Norman heard a knock at the door, and a man appeared dressed in the brown leather jacket like that worn by the killer, demanding food. Norman quickly shut and bolted the door. The mounties were summoned and soon appeared with their spotlights and police dogs. They combed the area for several hours. Everyone was in a panic. Some of the neighborhood women, attending an Institute meeting, were too afraid to drive home. The incident caused quite a stir and was the topic of conversation for many days after. The fugitive was found the next day in another area of the Island and community residents, including Norman, breathed a sigh of relief.5 All's Well That Ends Well An adventure prompted by a young child's curiosity caused excite¬ ment and anxiety around The Corner one Thursday evening in Sep tember, 1968. Two year old Alan John Robinson had climbed up on the trailer hitch of his Uncle Alan's half ton truck and was trying to peer over the tailboard to see what treasures were in the back when his Uncle Alan came out of John's house, jumped in the truck, and backed out of the driveway. Alan drove over to S.D.Dixon 's store where he made a quick stop before going up the Trans Canada to Simmon's Restaurant. Sheldon thought he saw something on the tailgate of the truck as Alan pulled away, but it was just at dusk and not unusual for farmers to have something hanging over the tailboards of their trucks anyway. Alan left Simmons after a short stop and drove back to The Corner, then out the Crossroad to the home farm in Augustine Cove . He drove across a potato field to inspect the potato harvester and back to the farmyard to fuel his truck. When he got out of the truck he heard a little voice say, "Susie's new trike!" Alan John , oblivious to the daring ride he had just experienced, was excited to see that his cousin Susan had a new tricycle. His Uncle Alan was not nearly so calm. After detecting that the young lad had suffered no ill affects beyond blistered fingers and a layer of dust, he rushed him back home to North Tryon . Everyone at The Corner, assisted by passers by, was involved in a frantic search of the school yard, back yards, and ditches. Uncle Alan was not as pleased with the adventure as his nephew and spent several restless nights wondering "What if....."!6 170
