Herb was a finish carpenter and built many of the beautiful homes in North Tryon , including the Leard and the Thomson houses. Herb was given a lot of land to build his own house as payment for his work on the David John Thomson house. This house, which was built about 1904 to the east of the Thomson house, is the Charles Thomson family house in 1992. Herb repaired clocks as a hobby. His house was never quiet because the clocks had to be wound and had to keep perfect time before they could be returned to their owners. 309
