Joseph had fought on the side of the British in the American Revolution. He was a sergeant in the 17th. Regiment of Foot, and after the war accepted the British offer of a grant of land in what was to become Canada . He arrived on Saint John's Island after a brief stop in Shelbourne, NS. He landed at in 1784 with the Wrights, Murrays and Strangs. Joseph was granted 200 acres of land in Lot 19, some fronting on the Wilmot River and some inland, but there is no record that Joseph ever settled there. He came to North Tryon where in 1794 he acquired 200 acres of land from Samuel Holland fronting on the west side of the Tryon River . Joseph was a member of the trustees who signed the first deed for the Tryon Methodist Church on Oct 16, 1819. His family also owned a pew in the first church. Joseph's will registered 5 Feb 1839 states: I give to my son William Wood 125 acres of land bounded on the north by land of James Thomson ; on the south by line running parallel to the said James Thomson 's south line with buildings and marsh. To my daughter Jane ( Mrs. Stordy ) I give 62.5 acres adjoining to the southward of the above land devised. To my son John I give 62 acres adjoiningjohn Thomas's with buildings. To my daughters Margaret, Rachael, Sarah, Phoebe, and Jane I give my books to be divided equally among them. I appoint my sons William and John to be my executors. Joseph Wood .
