CAP. 11.

A By-law Regulating the Fire Department.

BE it enacted by the City Council of the City of Charlottetown, as follows :—

I. The Fire Department shall be under the sole contr‘ol of a Board of Engineers to be appointed by the City Council. All vacancies occasioned by death, resignation, or absence, to be filled up by the Council. Any citizens refus— ing to accept the office of Engineer, when so appointed—ministers of religion, judges of the supreme court, physicians, surgeons, and apothe- caries excepted—shall be liable to a fine of six- teen dollars; provided that such person shall not have served as Engineer for the space of twelve months, at any time during the previous three years. »

2. The City Council may remove any or all of the Engineers from office at any time.

3. The Chief Engineer shall be appointed by the City Council. He shall have the supreme command over all the other Engineers. Engime, Hook and Ladder, Salvage, or other Fire COsm— panies, Constables, and all persons present at fires. He shall have exclusive control of all fire hydrants, and shall direct all measures :for the proper extinguishing of fires. It shall be his duty to inspect the Engine House, Fire Engine and Fire Apparatus belonging to the City once in each month, and superintend any alterations or repairs that may be ordered by
