[99] CAP. XXIII. A By-law relating to Highways, Streets, Squares and Bridges and defining the duties of the Surveyor. BE it enacted by the City Council of the City of Charlottetown, as follows 2—. I. There shall be one fit and proper person appointed by the City Council who shall be the Ap intmem Surveyor of Highways, Streets, Squares and °r “we,“ Bridges of said city, who shall be sworn and give security for the due and faithful performance of the duties of his said office. Said Surveyor shall receive such salary or compensation as the City Council shall hereafter determine upon, and said Surveyor shall retain his office during the pleasure of the City Council. 2. The said Surveyor may remove all incumbrances upon the, streets, prevent en- croachments thereon, make repairs. alterations Duties and improvements therein as required; open and make new streets when authorized; make and repair bridges, wharves, and other city property, and cause to be observed the laws touching the streets, bridges, wharves, and other city property, and the work to be performed thereon; may put up bars and fences to shut the street while undergoing repairs ; may raise sinks, alter or new-lay drains, water-courses, pipes and sewers, causing as little detriment to individuals as the case may admit of, and may cause the course of gutters, water-courses and channels running in or through the streets to
