Phil Thomson - barber.
Philip Thomson, born in Campbellton, Prince Edward Island, moved to Howlan with his family when a youth. He continued to ive at home and work on his father’s farm until he was in his early orties when he decided to become a barber. After learning his cho- en trade in Amherst, Nova Scotia, he set up his own business in iver Hebert, Nova Scotia.
About 1948 Philip came back to O’Leary, hauled a building in om Howlan and placed it on a vacant lot. After necessary renova- ions were made, with his red and white candy Cane striped barber le proudly displayed at the front of his shop, he opened for busi- ess.
Robert (Bob) Arsenault retired from the Services in 1991. He pened a barber shop in his home on January 3, 1992.
BEAUTY SALONS
As time began to improve late in the 1930’s some money was vailable for a few luxuries. Women once again became style con- ious.
In 1937 Ann Matheson opened a beauty parlour in a small sec- ‘on of HA Jelley’s Store. Armed with the best equipment available t that time, she began a career that was destined to last over fifty ears.
Ann got her basic training at Sunnyside Beauty Parlour in harlottetown. She did her post graduate work at the Mansfield
