WILLIAM CROSBY 1784-1866 William Crosby and his brother John were farmers in Lot 32 and in 1811 they purchased a property from John Cambridge and his wife. The description of this property in Lot 32 mentioned a " Mill Creek " (30). It is therefore possible that William and John were millers in Lot 32 prior to William's moving to Lot 30. In 1837 William Crosby leased a 100 acre parcel of land in Lot 30 from Samuel Cunard . This land was located to the north of the () and included the site where the Crosbys built the mills (31). The first indication of a mill on the property was in the 1841 census where John W. Crosby was noted as a miller. (John was the brother of William.) In 1843 a lease of property between David Stewart and Murdock Buchanan included a map which showed the existence of both a sawmill and corn mill on the property of William Crosby (32). In the same year William was noted as having premises near the Bridge in Lot 30 (46). In 1848 he converted his lease into a purchase from David Stewart (who had presumably purchased the land from Samuel Cunard ) and the document specifically mentioned the existence of "mills", presumably the sawmill and corn mill. The lease conversion actually reads "the mills of________Crosbie", presumably John W . (33).
