MCPHAIL'S

In 1915 Daniel McPhail who had previously peddled for J immie Robertson opened a small grocery store. In 1919 the store was burned and a new house was built on the site. (The house is that now occupied by David Cameron). Part of the house was used as a store until about 1925 (64). In the 1924/25 directory Daniel McPhail was listed as operating a store in Bonshaw (25).

BELL'S / MCPHAIL's

In November 1936 Dougald Bell of Bonshaw, a labourer, purchased from Alexander McNevin the lot at the eastern corner of the Argyle shore road and the main road (57). This transaction had been arranged in 1933 when Dougald had made his first payment to Alexander (59). It is believed that he moved the building to the lot on skids behind siX to eight horses. Dougald open the store in the fall of 1938 with basic commodities and for many years only had only one type of candy for the local children. Those were caramels and to many of this generation, the

intersection where the store was located was known as 'caramel comer'. The store prospered in a modest way and was purchased by Alfred McPhail in April 1947 (58,3 0,28).
