The road from what is now Strathgartney to Bonshaw was built in 1841 at the same time as the bridge across the river (7,8,9). The cost of this new bridge was 130 pounds (8). This new road and bridge connected the community more directly with Charlottetown and Tryon . This new bridge was noted as being repaired in 1867 and was replaced with a 60 foot steel span in 1912 (10,5). It was replaced circa 1953 when the road was realigned and its route towards Charlottetown changed. It was replaced with a triple box culvert which restricted the water during tidal action (11). Bridge circa 1916 courtesy of Annie Darrach In 1955 the road through the village was raised and the intersection with the Argyle Shore road changed. Residents remember it as the summer of dust, caused by the construction. The main road was first paved shortly afterwards, probably in 1956 (11). The box culverts were replaced in 1992 with a concrete span which should allow easier water movement (12). •69-
