As a result of this unfortunate incident a fund called the "Greater Love Fund" was set up to assist the family of William McRae which consisted of his widow and eleven children. The fund received donations from most of the prominent citizens of the area and from many other Islanders. William McRae was also honoured by the Carnegie Foundation with a hero's medal (22).
